Born in Germany, Rainer was named Best Actress in 1936 and 1937 for her performances in 'The Great Ziegfeld' and 'The Good Earth' - an achievement by only four other actors in Academy Awards history. A star of cinema's golden era, Rainer spent much of her life in London after her career rapidly declined in the early 40s.
