In this 1988 story, reporter Jill Emberson traveled to the Tanami desert to cover the efforts of rangers and wildlife ecologists to save a critically endangered small wallaby known as the mala, from the threat of extinction. Working in conjunction with the local Walpiri people, the rangers had established a captive breeding program inside a protected enclosure near Lake Surprise.
