Myanmar’s minister slammed over anti-Muslim comments

Description

Thura Aung Ko has, in an interview, claimed that Islam in Myanmar is the religion of minority associate citizens who acquired citizenship through the 1948 Union Citizenship Law. Adding however that Buddhists are full citizens. Rights groups argue that these comments feed into the Buddhist nationalist propaganda that Rohingya Muslims aren't true citizens of Myanmar and that they have come in from neighboring countries instead. This comes amid recent revelations that ruling party leader, Aung San Suu Chi, was angered to be interviewed by a Muslim BBC journalist in 2013. Most of Myanmar's 1.3 million ethnic Rohingya Muslims in the western state of Rakhine are deprived of citizenship rights.
