Description

Nantou County's Renai Township is affectionately known as Taiwan's violin village. This is due to the efforts of a couple which has committed time and money to musical education over the past six years. Now, these contributions are spreading overseas as the couple helped arrange for 10 violins to be donated to a music school in Myanmar founded by democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi. At this Myanmar music festival, many of the violins are made in Taiwan. They feature a special indigenous Atayal tribal design painted on the body.Aung San Suu Kyi personally accepted these violins, which were produced in Nantou's Renai Township. Upon seeing their village's violins go overseas, these teachers in Renai Elementary School were overjoyed.Wang Tse-jian and his wife paid out of their own pockets for music classes in this remote mountain village. She instructs the students and he repairs the violins, a skill which is self-taught. He has even taken this interest a step further by teaching village residents how to make violins. This couple contributed energy and even took out a bank loan upwards of NT$10 million to transform their community into a violin village. Their remarkable story is now attracting overseas interest.
