Description

In this video Dr Forgan-Smith helps explain the concept of a HIV test window period. The Alere Rapid HIV test does not test for HIV virus directly. What it tests for is a bodily reaction to the HIV virus. The Alere rapid HIV test checks for HIV antibodies and for a particular protein P24. Both antibodies and P24 are made by the body soon after infection with HIV. The body needs a little time to be able to created these proteins so there is a lag of up to 90 days after infection with the HIV virus and the antibodies and P24 are able to be detected. This is called "The Window Period". The Alere HIV test is able to detect HIV infection as early as 14 days however it's important to note that it is always recommended to have a 2nd test 45 days to 3 months after the exposure to ensure HIV has not been transmitted. http://melbournerapidhivtests.com.au/rapid-hiv-test-melbourne/window-period/ http://melbournerapidhivtests.com.au
