HOW TO RESPOND TO ANTI-GAY VIOLENCE

Description

The gay liberation movement is not winding down. It is gearing up. Here's what you need to know: anti-gay violence tends to initially increase in line with gay visibility. When South Africa legalized gay marriage, hate crimes surged: one man, Thapelo Makutle, was beheaded by two men after an argument about his sexuality; and lesbian activist Noxolo Nogwaza was stoned, stabbed, and gang-raped. Yesterday, France legalized gay marriage, but a gay French man told me he is more scared than ever: "Never in France have so many people joined in the streets to say 'no' to something. Many gay people are hurt. Many kids are thrown out by their parents. More than before the law." In New York City, there have been 22 anti-gay crimes so far this year, a dramatic increase from 13 this same time last year. But this movement isn't about the body. It's about the spirit, and it's there we must do our work.
