Description

Anderson (Indiana) City Councilman Art Pepelea chewed out a group of high school students in a minute-long diatribe and then stormed out of the room after a city council regular meeting in 2013 was delayed by six minutes. Pepelea is seeking reelection in the 2015 Anderson, Indiana municipal elections. Pepelea is challenged by Josh Gaskill in the Republican primary election. Pepelea is supported by his former political adversary Mayor Kevin S. Smith. Transcript: ART PEPELEA: Mr. President, I’m going to leave the meeting. The reason I’m going to leave the meeting is right now, six minutes after seven. By law, we start the meeting at seven. If you people can’t be here on time because of the mayor, then you need to leave the meeting, okay? Don’t waste my time or the other people’s valuable time, okay? Thank you very much. RODNEY CHAMBERLAIN: As a city councilman, I want to apologize for what he just said to the youth of our community. You know, sometimes things don’t start on time. But you guys are important, so we waited. You are the future of our community and keep doing what you’re doing no matter what was just said. PEPELEA: And I’m going to add to that. What’s wrong with America today is that there’s rules, and regulations are not followed. DAVID EICKS: (Inaudible speaking to Pepelea) PEPELEA: He doesn’t have to come back. EICKS: (Inaudible) CHAMBERLAIN: Are you leaving? PEPELEA: Okay, I’ll – I’ll respect you. EICKS: It’s time for a roll call. DEPUTY CITY CLERK: Councilman Pepelea? PEPELEA: I’m here!
