Description

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer in Berlin, on Wednesday, to discuss Germany's contribution to the humanitarian aid organisation. SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister (German): "We can offer good examples, in Lebanon, in Libya, where humanitarian aid organisations are needed all over the area. In particular, the Red Cross, the International Red Cross and its partner organisations. And I was pleased that we discussed, today, how we can further develop our cooperation, where we should concentrate our joint efforts - in which crises and conflict zones. This is including the three areas, namely Lebanon, Syria and Libya." SOT, Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (German): "We see ourselves as humanitarian agents, although I am greatly aware that the political conflicts, which lie behind these military disputes, cannot be solved by humanitarians. And there are no humanitarian solutions for these political conflicts; there are only political solutions. And I think it is, thus, extremely important that humanitarian agents such as Red Cross, that they are standing on the frontlines of all these conflicts, and, from these frontlines, report a realistic image back to the makers of political decisions. And that happens from Syria, to Yemen, to the Ukraine and other places." SOT, Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (German): "The growth isn't positive but, rather, is an indication that we have more violence and more conflict, and, when there is a humanitarian framework, we can solve them by at least being able to ensure that there's some stability. We have seen, in the last few months, that in particular contexts in Europe and in Germany what the consequences of such conflicts are. That is internally displaced people, that is refugees. And it is also the despair that these people feel, who can no longer see prospects for the future and who are displaced from their own countries. And, in this sense, I offer thanks for the support for people who are impacted by displacement."
