Contributors: Taio Lawson, Remi Graves and Omar El-Khairy “We are the innovators they are the imitators” is a lyric by My Morning Jacket that you may recall from a particularly brilliant episode of American Dad, I digress, but it’s a sentiment that stuck with me. I am proud to be of a lineage of people who persevered and in many ways flourished in countries that created institutions aimed at holding held them back. We have innovated, experimented, questioned, influenced and forced changes through Art. Ethnic minorities have been the innovators, and they the imitators on countless occasions. We have F***KED some S**T UP! We see this history in Music, Art, Literature and Dance…but is this history in Theatre? I’m not too sure. I want to question whether we feel we can innovate in Theatre. Are we caught up in the need to learn that which is white and right? Do we have licence to experiment in theatre? Does this restrict us from pushing forward in using theatre as a means of activism today? This talk will have a look at other mediums in order to try to answer some of these questions and hopefully go someway in setting out a schematic to unfetter our experimental side. But, beyond all this, the question still remains… Who will program the work?
