Description

This week, American Samoa celebrated Flag Day to commemorate 114 years of Tutuila and Aunu'u islands being a United States Territory. Flag Day is an annual event that is similar to the Fourth of July in the United States that includes fautasi (long boat) races and cultural performances to highlight the Samoan culture. Fautasi races are a rare occurrence and you can only catch a glimpse of this spectacular Samoan water sport during Flag Day. Dances and songs are performed by villages which invoke a sense of pride in Samoans as they celebrate an ever evolving culture with ties to American culture. The National Park of American Samoa preserves and protects tropical rainforest, fruit bats, coral reefs, and Samoan culture. There's no better example of Samoan culture coming alive through sights and sound than through Flag Day.
